One of the best beaches in the world is the one you can’t miss when traveling to this land!

The Holy Spirit Islands are part of Australia’s beach paradise, located off the Queensland coast, and they were one of the highlights of my drive along the Bruce Highway from Brisbane to Cairns.

The famous image of Whitehaven Beach, often referred to as “the best beach in the world”, is one you can’t miss when planning a trip to this part of the world. But does it live up to all the hype?

Getting to the Whitsunday Islands
The main entrance to the Whitsunday Islands on the mainland is Airlie Beach. A town with a definite backpacker vibe. With plenty of bars, stores and accommodation options, it’s a welcome relief from some of the smaller and less-equipped places you might stop at on your road trip.

With a well-tended swimming lagoon and the instant feeling of relaxation you need, this is a great place to unwind for a few days and explore the neighbouring islands.

If you’re after great views and more space, then the Waterview Airlie Apartment, where I stayed for two nights, is a great choice. The team there are very friendly and very happy to find and book activities for you, and they often shop around for the best deals and come back to you.

The Holy Spirit Islands
The Holy Spirit Islands consist of 74 tropical islands, including the most famous air entrance, Hamilton Island. However, the most famous destination is definitely White Paradise Beach.

Renting your own boat or hopping on a liveaboard is a popular way to explore all the islands and something I long to return to one day.

The boat rides from Shute Harbour or Airlie beach are not the cheapest in the world, but ask around town and you should be able to find out which operators are offering discounted rates at the time.

A small nature trail can also take you from the beach to a higher vantage point, giving you a breathtaking view of some of the neighboring islands.

Of course, the beach is amazing with its white sand and beautiful clear waters. However, I have to say that I’m not sure it’s worth the time or money spent to go there for a beach. From the ground, you can’t really appreciate it in all its glorious beauty.

Enjoying the “whirlpools” of the white sheltered beaches, but above is a treat for the eyes.

The famous “heart-shaped reef” also sails over the island, and again, it really does live up to the hype. The plane ride certainly gave a better idea of the huge coral reef that stretches all the way to Cairns.

I would even say that if I had to choose between playing on the beach or cruising above, then I would be paid for every flight.
